Winter Haikus

Make a list of all the things you like about winter. Now write a winter haiku! A haiku is a Japanese poem of 17 syllables. To find out how many syllables are in a word, say it aloud and clap. For example, “winter” had 2 syllables: “win-ter”; “glistening” has 3 syllables: “glist-en-ing.” A haiku has 3 lines. The first line of a haiku has 5 syllables, the second line has 7 syllables, the third line has 5 syllables. Below are 2 examples of winter haikus.

Winterwear

Now it’s your turn! Will you write about sledding with your friends, sitting by the fire with a mug of hot chocolate, or making a snowman? You can write a haiku about all of those things!
